A Most Satisfactory Ending

The old man must have had a cloaking or avoidance spell of some sort on his car, because the security patrols that occasionally passed by in the night did not give it a first glance, much less a second, despite the fact that it was occupied by a loudly snoring wizard. I was not unduly bothered by the snoring, since I was on watch anyway. It did make it difficult to hear noises outside, but I decided that was the price I paid for picking an old man as my partner in crime. Crime prevention, that is. The side benefit of making trespassing miscreants beg for their mothers was just icing on the cake.

It was late into the night, indeed nearing the hour of dawn, when I finally had the premonition of trouble. Even though I possessed a good vantage from which to watch the library’s front and side, its rear was hidden from me, and I knew the witches would not be so foolish as to use the front door. And so even though my hair suddenly stood on end and my whiskers twitched most irritatingly, I had neither seen, heard, nor smelt anything amiss. No matter, I knew when to trust my instincts.

The wizard’s floating letters had faded soon after the old man had fallen asleep, so I simply uncurled from my comfortable perch upon his chest and laid a soft paw on his cheek. His response was a resounding snore.

Changing tactics, I decided a thorough ear licking would do the trick. Ears were a safer bet than faces. Despite humans’ lack of physical prowess, when startled awake by unknown sensations upon their sensitive faces, they often reacted with violent spasms that even a master of agility such as myself might fall prey to. And with a wizard of such caliber, who knew what magical defense he might resort to in a semiconscious state. My collar would most likely protect me, but it was best not to tempt fate.

Slightly hampered by a multitude of ear bristles, I proceeded with my plan and was soon rewarded with a snort and a disgruntled mumble, at which point I hopped over to the passenger seat and out of the direct line of fire, just in case.

“Verdammte Feen…sind wieder im Jägermeister…” The wizard, far from stirring to wakefulness, rolled over with a creak of old bones, and his snores once again filled the rickety vehicle.

With a tail twitch of displeasure, I assumed the proper stance and resorted to that time-honored tactic of cats around the globe: I began to sing the song of my people. It was the only reliable way to draw humans from the warm depths of their slumbers, though a cat’s inevitable success in this regard was usually followed by a hail of pillows and house shoes. Since neither item was available within the cramped space of the car, I felt safe from that particular repercussion.

“Heiliger Strohsack! Zum Donnerwetter, what is all that noise?”

“Well, if you didn’t sleep like a deaf lump of petrified wood, I wouldn’t have needed to resort to it.
